Accept the unchangeable facts and make your own inner choices - Reflections on "When Breath Becomes Air"

The author of this book is a doctor and a writer, but after being diagnosed with lung cancer, he writes this book more from the perspective of a patient. Compared to ordinary patients, he has a deeper understanding of his condition and is more aware of possible treatment options and the impacts after surgery. The descriptions in the book feel very real, filled with the regret of unfulfilled ambitions. During the treatment process, one has to face many choices, whether regarding treatment methods or subsequent life arrangements, which are not easy. Sometimes it seems there are many options, but in reality, the outcomes are all similarly unsatisfactory. In such cases, not getting overly entangled in those unchangeable results is more beneficial for focusing on arrangements that have a greater impact on oneself or others.

Many people fear thinking about death and can easily break down when faced with death-related situations. In fact, most people have little choice when confronted with death; worrying too much or investing excessive manpower and resources can sometimes be futile. What truly needs to be contemplated are the choices in life; living the life you want is more meaningful than living a long life without self. To hear the way in the morning is enough, even if one dies in the evening. Life is not about length, but about your experiences. The "way" of ordinary people is not some truth, but rather the life you truly desire.
