Confidence, Independence, Discipline — Movie Review of "Gran Torino"

This is a film directed and starred by Eastwood in 2008. The style of the film is somewhat different from his previous works, but the conveyed spirit is consistent, namely confidence, independence, and self-discipline.

The protagonist played by Eastwood dislikes effeminacy, which actually means he does not like people who lack confidence. His conversations with some old friends also reflect his willingness to associate only with confident individuals.

At the time of filming, Eastwood was already 78 years old. The character in the film emphasizes his hands-on abilities, possessing various tools to repair houses and appliances, not wanting to rely on his children or go to a nursing home, maintaining his independence. He also teaches a neighbor boy to be self-sufficient and start working to support himself.

After the gang's various atrocities against the neighbors in the film, the Korean War veteran played by Eastwood does not impulsively resort to violence but instead controls his emotions, preventing the neighbor boy from sacrificing himself in vain, and thinks through a suitable action plan, demonstrating the discipline of a soldier.

The film explores the issue of immigration in America. As an immigrant country, it is normal for the United States to have groups from different parts of the world with varying cultural customs. As long as there is mutual respect and assistance, most groups can coexist harmoniously. Every group may have some bad individuals, but that should not lead to discrimination against the entire group.
