Some animals are more unequal than others - Zootopia 2 Movie Review

As a sequel film nine years later, Zootopia 2 inevitably invites comparisons with the first installment. The original Zootopia was stunning, with an innovative story, rich connotations, and prominent character personalities, winning the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. Given this context, it is indeed challenging for the sequel to surpass its predecessor. Disney chose a cautious approach, adding some elements based on the original without making significant changes. Therefore, Zootopia 2 lacks new creativity, merely increasing attention to marginalized animals, with the core story revolving around an Indiana Jones-style adventure focused on shipping characters. The final credits of the film also mention Indiana Jones. Gary, voiced by the actor who once played Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, is merely a tool snake, and the character's traits are not expressed at all. The two main characters, in their quest to ship characters, can only amplify each other's flaws and grow anew, leading to an unsurprising happy ending.

Although it doesn't match the original, Zootopia 2 is still decent compared to other typical animated films. The inclusion of reptiles effectively reflects the status and plight of marginalized groups. Although the portrayal of these groups remains stereotypical and lacks detail, at least it allows everyone to see marginalized groups, which is already progress. In Zootopia, the environment appears harmonious, with various animals coexisting peacefully, but that is merely a surface phenomenon. In reality, many animals are inherently in unequal positions, and some are in even more unequal situations, struggling to find opportunities to voice their concerns. If this aspect were explored more deeply, the film would have greater depth, though it might invite more political controversy.

As a family-friendly popcorn movie, the pacing is still fast, with plenty of laughs. The visuals are finely crafted, and the voice acting and sound effects are good. In a Dolby theater, different sound effects can be well distinguished, making it worth a trip to the cinema.
