Post-match comments on Liverpool's home game against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League

Four changes were made to the starting lineup compared to the previous match. The most surprising move was Isak replacing Ekitiké as the center forward so quickly. Left and right fullbacks Robertson and Frimpong replaced Kerkez and Szoboszlai, while Szoboszlai took Mac Allister's position as left defensive midfielder.

Isak's introduction significantly impacted the team. He demonstrated excellent composure on the ball in the penalty area and made decisive decisions. He quickly developed a clear understanding with Wirtz. Although his two shots lacked sufficient power and angle, they were both well-placed. Once he regains his best form, he will be a lethal weapon and is likely to unlock Wirtz's assist potential. Isak's command in the box left Gakpo in an awkward position. His inward cuts became redundant, as dribbling past defenders and delivering crosses from deep inside the box aren't his strengths. This led to his substitution in the 58th minute. Wirtz shifted to left winger, with Mac Allister coming on as an attacking midfielder. Ekitiké and Bradley replaced Isak and Frimpong, primarily for player protection. Wirtz's approach on the left differed from Gakpo's, relying primarily on movement and passing to create chances. Perhaps lacking confidence, his shots lacked decisiveness; a goal or assist might have boosted his confidence. Ngumoha replaced Wirtz in the 74th minute, shifting to a winger-as-a-spark tactic. However, facing fresh defenders, his ability wasn't sufficient to break through the defense, though he did earn a corner kick.

While numerous chances were created from open play, only Gravenberch and Salah's right-sided combination play led to the second goal. The other two goals came from set pieces: Robertson's fortunate deflection of Salah's free kick and van Dijk's stoppage-time header from Szoboszlai's corner. Set-piece execution has markedly improved, and open-play opportunities have increased significantly. Unfortunately, Salah hit the post with an unmarked shot inside the box, while Wirtz and Ekitiqué each squandered clear chances. Better finishing could have ended the match without needing a last-minute winner.

With Isak's arrival and injured players returning, Liverpool's current squad depth is enviable. The team now has greater flexibility in lineup selection and can implement more rotation, making predicting the starting XI more challenging. For the upcoming Premier League home match against Everton, with three games in a week, rotation is expected. Mac Allister is likely to replace Szoboszlai at left defensive midfield, while Kerkez could come in for Robertson at left-back. Isak, Wirtz, and Gravenberch may also be rotated. However, given the intensity of the Merseyside derby, the number of rotations is unlikely to be excessive, with a major rotation expected for next Wednesday's League Cup match.
