Life Lies in Having Your Own Thoughts - Review of “Arrugas”

“Arrugas” is a Spanish animated movie depicting life in a nursing home. Compared to Japanese, American, and Middle Eastern animations, it adopts a more realistic approach and is not suitable for minors. It is better suited for older audiences.

The story unfolds primarily within the nursing home, depicting the lives of its diverse residents. For those with Alzheimer's, when the disease is not severe, they can still maintain their own thoughts and manage their daily routines, though they may occasionally forget things. When Emílio first arrives at the nursing home, he struggles to adjust, unsure of what to do. Through his roommate Miguel, he learns about the other residents' situations. One resident constantly tries to call her children but can't find the phone or remember if she's already called; another believes she's aboard the Orient Express heading to Istanbul for a trip; one has saved tea bags and butter to give to his grandson; and an elderly couple who shared a romantic past—though the man's severe dementia leaves him with few memories—still beams with joy whenever reminded of key words from their story.

Most nursing homes resembled prisons, with residents' activities severely restricted—their days filled with eating, drinking, toileting, and staring into space. Miguel, however, sought ways to enliven his own existence, finding amusement by assisting or playfully teasing the other residents. Eventually, he managed to sneak Emílio out of the nursing home at night. While driving without a license, they
accidentally caused an accident. Emílio's condition worsened as a result and he was moved to the upper floor, the area for those requiring full-time care. Miguel volunteered to go upstairs to look after him. When Miguel mentioned Emílio's nickname, Emílio smiled knowingly.

The topic of aging is generally quite heavy, and there are no particularly perfect solutions. More often than not, it requires an adjustment in mindset. As we age, we must learn to accept declining physical abilities and adapt our lifestyles accordingly. While still capable, we should pursue our desires and create cherished memories—these joyful recollections become a source of comfort in later years. Even when physical limitations restrict most activities, life retains meaning as long as we retain our own thoughts and aspirations.
