Accept the unchangeable facts and make your own choices - Thoughts after reading 'When Breath Becomes Air'

The author of this book is a doctor and a writer, but after being diagnosed with lung cancer, he writes more from the perspective of a patient. Compared to ordinary patients, he has a deeper understanding of his condition and is more aware of possible treatment methods and the impacts after surgery. The descriptions in the book feel very real, filled with regret over unattainable ambitions. During the treatment process, there are many choices to confront, whether in treatment methods or in post-treatment life arrangements, which are not easy at all. Sometimes it appears that there are many options, but the outcomes are similarly unsatisfactory. In such cases, it is more beneficial to not be overly entangled in those unchangeable results, but instead focus on thinking about the arrangements that could have a greater impact on oneself or others.

Many people fear thinking about death and tend to collapse when faced with situations related to it. In fact, most people have limited choices when confronted with death, and over-worrying or investing excessive human resources and finances is sometimes futile. What needs to be truly contemplated are the choices in life; living the life you want is more meaningful than leading a long life devoid of self. A person who has attained enlightenment has no regret in life. Life is not measured by its length, but by your experiences. The 'Dao' of ordinary people is not some truth, but rather the life you truly want.
